VIP EVENT: Brave New Deventer #BeConnecTED
Hi there! At this year’s conference Brave New World in Deventer we had our wonderful friends from TEDxMuenster visiting us and we wanted to show them, and others, the cool and unique parts of Deventer as well as giving them an extra special program. Together with some other guests (e.g. winners from past events) we created a VIP pre-event through Deventer. Did you miss it, but are you also curious about what Deventer has all to offer? Then I’ll take you through the program! Around 10.15 our first guests arrived at Deventer Schouwburg. There was some time to relax, grab a coffee and take pictures with the TEDx flag.
We asked all our guests to write a short story about themselves, for example about their interests, their work/study or a funny story. We then gave everyone a one of these stories, and this was the beginning of the ‘beconnecTED’ game. The idea of the game was that you had to find the person to whom the story belongs during the event. In order to do this the guests had to mingle and talk to each other.
Around 11.00 the actual program began, together with the first surprise for the 16 guests that attended the VIP event. Since we are in the Netherlands, we of course have to use the bicycle, so we had arranged bikes and for the extra brave ones tandems (shoutout to the two brave girls that dared to use them!). Our first destination was the Gasfabriek.
The Gasfabriek is a business innovation centre and meeting point for innovation, inspiration and interaction. In the Gasfabriek our first speaker, Bart Kruijshoop (lecturer and researcher of Saxion University) welcomed us together with the boss of the Gasfabriek. Bart discussed and elaborated on the things in Deventer he finds brave, such as the Gasfabriek and Humanitas (the elderly home in Deventer that connects elderly with students).
After his talk, that lasted about 15 minutes, we hopped on our bikes again and biked along the beautiful IJssel. During the ride the guests could enjoy the lovely scenery (it was a perfect day to be outside) and share stories with each other.
Around 12.30 the group arrived at the city hall of Deventer, where the super friendly Femke van Workum (employee of the city hall) waited for us. She had organized a tour through the building for us. Since the building is new, there was a lot to talk about. We heard things about the sustainability of the building (it is one of the most sustainable building in the Netherlands), the new way of working (flex working) and some interesting insight facts. Did you know that the complete walls are covered with the fingerprints of people from Deventer? Me neither! The group was very intrigued by the beautiful building and the background information and almost had to be dragged out to continue the final part of the program.
When we arrived back at the Schouwburg, Denise Emot (one of the organizers of the TEDxSaxionUniversity Brave New World conference), welcomed us and arranged a short backstage program for the guests. We heard about all the preparations that are going on before an event like this, learned more about stage design, got to know how some of the speakers were contacted to become a speaker and share their story and we got the chance to be on the actual stage!
And then we were almost at the end of our event already. We ended the ‘beconnecTED’ game, and found out some interesting things about our guests, said goodbye to each other and got ready for the big conference. Throughout the event we were very lucky with our personal photographer, the amazing Patricia Filippe (also known as Patty Peppe). Thanks to her we can relive this day whenever we want, by just taking a look at the awesome pictures she took! I’d like to thank our guests that made the event unforgettable and for everyone else, I’d love to see you next time!
